The publishing industry has five advantages for them that I will need to overcome in order to self-publish.
- The Filter – The book industry has editors who read drafts of novels and evaluate which are good and not. People's faith in the filter will get them to read the books.
- The list of reviewers – The book industry has contacts to reviewers. The reviewers know the industry has filtered out the crap, so this are willing to read the books
- The selling outlet – The book industry knows all the book stores across the country who will sell books. Likewise, the book stores know the companies in which to buy the book from.
- Marketing department – The book industry has a marketing department, a team who each spend 40 hour work weeks on marketing a book, that they run a book through that:
- Does design work
- Sends out press releases
- Generates enthusiasm for the book
- Have an idea of what sells and what does not
- Has Money to pour into Marketing the book
Another Obvious Obstacle:
Who Reads books these days? Lots of people.
Researching about the industry online, I've come across studies that suggest there has been a surge in reading in the last few years, that roughly 70% of people claim they've at least read one book over the course of a year. Apparently, a large contributing sourced of this surge is tablet and kindle devices, which allow readers to carry around multiple books without using up as much space. To read more about this interesting phenomena, please see http://libraries.pewinternet.org/2012/04/04/the-rise-of-e-reading/.
Great news for writers.
This means, by
Investing into the right resources, I can grow this into a success.
I'll provide my Plan to overcome these obstacles in the next blog.
